The keyboard is worth the entire purchase price

Pros

  • +Best keyboard I've ever typed on
  • +Weighs almost nothing
  • +Battery lasts my entire work day

Cons

  • -Speakers are pathetic
  • -Design hasn't changed in years

I'm a writer who types 5,000+ words daily and I've used every premium laptop keyboard available. The ThinkPad X1 Carbon keyboard is the best — better travel, better tactility, better layout than anything Apple, Dell, or HP makes. At 2.48 lbs, I forget it's in my bag. Battery reliably gives me 12-13 hours of writing and web browsing. It's not flashy, it's not exciting, but it's the most functional laptop I've ever owned. The speakers are genuinely terrible though — I use AirPods exclusively.

Enterprise perfect, consumer boring

Verified

Pros

  • +IR face unlock is fast and reliable
  • +IT management features are comprehensive
  • +Incredibly portable

Cons

  • -Looks like a 2015 laptop
  • -No GPU for any creative work
  • -Screen brightness is weak outdoors

My company issues ThinkPad X1 Carbons and I understand why — they're reliable, secure, lightweight, and the IT team loves managing them. From a consumer perspective though, it's boring. The all-black design hasn't evolved. The 14-inch display is adequate but not inspiring. And any photo or video work beyond basic cropping is painfully slow with just Intel Iris Xe. This is the ultimate productivity machine for people who live in Office and Chrome. For anyone else, it's underwhelming.

Traveled to 12 countries with this laptop — bulletproof

Pros

  • +Survived being dropped twice
  • +TrackPoint is essential for cramped airplane seats
  • +Never had a hardware issue

Cons

  • -Nothing meaningful — it just works

In 18 months, this laptop has been to 12 countries, survived two drops from counter height, endured desert heat in Morocco and humidity in Thailand, and spent hundreds of hours in airplane tray tables. Not a single hardware issue. The TrackPoint nub (yes, I use it) is essential on cramped flights where there's no room for a mouse. The keyboard has been typed on more than any other device I own and shows zero wear. ThinkPads are the Toyota Hilux of laptops — they just refuse to die.
